There’s a funny irony about modern life we’ve never been more connected, yet we’ve rarely felt so alone. Our phones ping constantly with updates from our friends and colleagues, sometimes people that we haven’t seen in years, and not forgetting the annoying ads for things we didn’t know we needed. But even in this endless digital buzz, loneliness has become one of today’s biggest epidemics. Many people now rely on AI for company and it seems that dating is now the norm via smart phone apps and sadly meaningful human contact is becoming harder to find.
Cue… padel; the fastest growing sport in the world. Padel in the UK is in its infancy and right now as the landscape grows padel and smart padel operators have a powerful opportunity to tap into today’s digital burn out.
Padel isn’t only about smashing balls across the court, it’s about energy, connection, team work and fun. Padel isn’t a solitary workout, it is very much a social and inclusive sport that naturally draws out people’s humour, sense of belonging and desire to have fun and a good laugh. Most of us have heard about the endorphin effect ‘happy hormones’ which are released naturally when playing sport and in this case; padel which in turn reduces tension and improves mental clarity.
Padel is the healthy alternative to screens and provides us with a refreshing digital detox. Along with fresh air and social play the combination is proven to lower cortisol levels (stress hormones). Studies and reports indicate that playing padel can serve as an effective strategy to reduce screen time and in turn significantly improve both physical and mental health. Whilst currently there are no studies explicitly titled on how padel can help people improve their mental health; research highlights that it replaces other screen-based leisure activities and encourages physical activity over sedentary behaviour.
Padel is much more than a current sports trend, it really is therapy in motion. Every game, match and social interaction on the padel court strengthens the body and focuses the mind as well as uplifting the human spirit!
